Yes, this is true isn't it?  So, here's a question for you.  Normal IQ ranges between 80 - 120, with 100 being the median.  Let's focus our attention on those with a low-normal IQ, say 80. No brain injury (no "cool spots" in neural imaging). This person exhibits poor problem solving skills and appears to have little ability to engage in abstract thinking, but is marginally functional and can communicate.  What, exactly, is going on with the rest of his brain?  Its not "off", not actually broken, the question is, what is it doing?  Do you have any guess as to this?

Been pondering this and my only guess is that the neurons/transmitters are not connected enough. The connectivity between the brain cells is not strong enough to let information flow from one sector to another. Some of this is genetics and some is environmental. If you do nothing.. well then definitely not going to stay sharp. A lot of my contemporaries that grew up in the trailer park are an example of this. They coast be, do exactly what they have to do, and nothing else.

You bring up an interesting example of your trailer-park contemporaries. I do tend to overly discount environmental factors.  So, low-normal IQ individuals do lack curiosity, or at least that's what the literature on this topic seems to say. You place 2 individuals, one with high-normal IQ and another with low-normal IQ, in a dysfunctional trailer-park living in a nearly identical environment.  The one who has an innate sense of curiosity, assuming he stays away from drugs/alcohol, will be driven to explore the world beyond his immediate community.  He finds he's capable and is often rewarded for poking and prodding deeper into the unknown, non-trailer-park world. Driven by curiosity, but lacking any experience or guidance, he takes a "bad turn" or two, but has the mental fortitude to correct the mistake, and the curiosity to drive him to new adventures.

The other who lacks curiosity and perhaps even fears the unknown, will do exactly what he sees others around him doing.  Survival is what mostly occupies this individual's mind - "do what others around me do, and I'll be ok".  New, complex and challenging situations frustrate him because he lacks the mental ability to easily navigate them - he's experienced this, fears it and therefore keeps his head down and avoids it.  Take this same non-curious, seemingly low-IQ individual and place him inside of a family that has resources to expose him to a wide range of pursuits - art, music, theater, education, etc. Other than slight embarrassment and boredom, there is no real fear to do as he's told and experience what has been placed before him.  Given enough varying activities, he may find that he is naturally drawn to an activity that he lacked the curiosity to discover on his own.

I am close with one of my brothers, not so close with the other, mainly because of his wife.  I suppose everyone has their issues, but at least I can say that neither of my brothers are mean.  Why do some brothers end up hating each other and other brothers tend to be protective of their kin?  Parents?  Or, are some people just born ****-people.

My 'good' brother is mean because he is wrathful - and this, because he stayed drunk or high for much of his life and did not do the essential work of 'growing up.' But he always kept a steady job and paid his bills - he just had plenty of DUIs and other catastrophes of substance abuse. But the biggest negative effect of the alcohol was the delay in becoming an adult, which is why he was never able to work through the rage that possesses him and keeps him wrathful. My other brother who is still living is just a degenerate alcoholic. He had magnificent potential, but allowed childhood traumas to send him ever-sewerward. He always surrounded himself with losers, so that he could shine, and so that none of his associates had any platform from which to call him on his ****. Very sad case. I was always striving to upgrade my associations, and he was always looking for a bigger waste of skin to befriend. Every time he almost dies from whatever substances he is abusing, he ends up in rehab and saved by the bell. The sands of his hourglass are almost run out. He is in the horse spittle as I write this, with some sort of pancreatic issue.

Not so much with me, however.......

OTOH...I played chess against a kid I was stationed with in the Army who was a Hill Billy  from WV who  had a 100 IQ MOS [PRC 77 radio repairman]...and he could play with his back to the table while smoking hash and win against ALL COMERS  in 10 moves or less.   
That was a very humbling thing that I rarely subjected myself to ...to lose in chess to Jed Clampett's Son

After reading this, about all I can think is "I'm one lucky M-F'er". Not that my siblings are without their problems, but drugs and alcohol ain't one of them.

This is what I was talking about! Something is efficiently "clicking" in his brain, but just not something that would show up on standard testing.  I believe you can use chess as an alternative basis for quantifying a portion of someone's intelligence.

As for me, I only get better at chess if I am playing a lot.  If I stop playing for a little while, I quickly revert to a lower baseline level of play. These people who are naturally good chess players - they see the game unfold in their mind. With lots of practice I feel I cam almost see it, but I never really get there - not like Jed Clampett's son.
