Why do they call it the Gulf of Mexico?

It has been the most common name since the mid-17th century, when it was still considered a Spanish sea. French Jesuits used this name as early as 1672. Well, I was actually planing on renaming it Washington JD.  But, Trumpltown will do. What should we rename California........   Here are some ideas:

• Robert E. Leeland
• New Nairobi
• Gender Confused Palisades
