Amazon is a huge offender of this. Remember after Jeff Bozo went up in his dick shaped rocket and then had some revelation about how we need to treat the Earth better. Therefore, he made a pledge to monitor the environmental impacts from products being sold through his company? How wonderful and inspiring. One problem- he only did 1% of the products. He is such a dick. 

A lot of companies that put that recycling symbol on their products aren't recyclable. It just makes the consumers feel good, so they buy more. For example, many beauty products have that symbol on their containers. However, their containers are plastic. Plastic wont die. It is virtually immortal. So if you throw it in a recycling bin, the containers get shipped to third world countries for them to use as whatever...water containers, food receptacles, etc...However, the volume of these containers and other "recyclable" items are so overwhelmingly large that it's impossible for the people to use all of that. It would take them 5 lifetimes just to make a dent in the amount of items they receive. Therefore, it ends up dumped in the ocean.

Interesting. No surprise, since plastic comes from petrochemicals derived from crude oil and natural gas.

But can it be a "clean" fuel?
I read a long time ago a 14" piece of 3/4" pvc plumbing pipe, when burned, can fatally poison an entire house.

My guess is you take the raw plastic and liquefy it with a combustible agent to make it easier to use.. 
In a closed loop system where the exhaust gas quality is being monitored, the rate of feed from the tank of liquefied plastic can be adjusted either way with the rate of feed from the cleaner burning fuel source.
So this could be done at a coal fired electrical plant or maybe a crude oil burning cargo ship. 
You might be right about some of the more toxic plastics not being redeemable...?
