Well, the beginning is always a good place to start. I was thinking of picking one at random, just to see if it grabs me.

I've read some books where the author takes too long to grab the reader and immerse him in the story.  Which usually means its going to be a slow, arduous read. Then there are books with a great lead-in, but the author **** out nonsense after the first few pages.  And, other authors (caughcaughstephenking) write fantastic stories with gripping lead-ins, well developed characters, but were too f-ing stoned by the end to write a great ending.

"Ahhh, I got this great advance on a new novel - better get writing.  Need to pay the rent or my wife will bitch-kill me.  Rent's paid and I'm 3/4 done with this book.  Let's see..... contacts.....Rafael.....yeah, he has the best cocaine......"

Give the reason most is uninhabited. My brain thinks because the geography doesn't support a complete environment a society can exist upon self sufficiently.
