I don't get the argument...while they may resemble each other, they're their own class of weapon, IE, Fully Automatic or Military Class Machine Gun and semiautomatic single trigger pull for civilian use...neither interchangeable nor adaptable to the other...

Dickhead's original argument is the Colt Sporter, the original AR 15 SEMI automatic was designed for war.  When he was schooled that it was not the Armalite 15 automatic weapon, that Colt just used the name, redesigned the lower, he does what he usually does when he wrong.

This has been a years long temper tantrum for him

I posted citations for the ATF that show it I it classified as a machine gun.  I posted the original BATF classification letter for the Sporter which did not classify it as a machine to the ew design of the lower.

When you show the BATF does not use the classification machine-gun to classify automatic weapons you you can declare victory.

Golly gee, there are is the new design for the Sporter.  That makes TWO designs.  How often were you dropped on your head as a baby?

In order to prevent a civilian semi-automatic AR-15 from being readily converted for use with the select fire components, Colt changed a number of features. Parts changed include the lower receiver, bolt carrier, hammer, trigger, disconnector, and safety/mode selector. The semi-automatic bolt carrier has a longer lightening slot to prevent the bolt's engagement with an automatic sear. Due to a decrease in mass the buffer spring is heavier. On the select fire version, the hammer has an extra spur which interacts with the additional auto-sear that holds it back until the bolt carrier group is fully in battery, when automatic fire is selected.[22] Using a portion of the select fire parts in a semi-automatic rifle will not enable a select fire option.[23][better source needed] As designed by Colt the pins supporting the semi-auto trigger and hammer in the lower receiver are larger than those used in the military rifle to prevent interchangeability between semi-automatic and select fire components.[24]
