• The Rubella Epidemic:
In the mid-1960s, a major rubella (German measles) epidemic swept across the United States, infecting an estimated 12.5 million people.
  • Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS):
Rubella infection during pregnancy could lead to serious birth defects in the developing fetus, a condition known as Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS)
  • Fear and Anxiety:
Pregnant women were understandably terrified of contracting rubella, as it could cause blindness, deafness, heart problems, and other serious health issues in their babies.
  • Impact on Pregnancy:
The rubella epidemic resulted in an estimated 20,000 babies born with CRS, along with 11,000 miscarriages and 2,100 neonatal deaths.
  • CDC pick: Trump's CDC pick said he would recommend measles vaccine for children
  • Trump administration axed studies about ways to improve vaccine trust and access
  • Trump administration's decision to rescind $11 billion in pandemic-related grants across the country will hinder their ability to respond to the growing outbreak
  • Measles is not a harmless childhood illness, but a highly contagious, potentially life-threatening disease
  • The suffering we are seeing ... avoidable//------------------------------

-------------In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made several unsupported or misleading claims about the measles vaccine, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said is safe and “the most important tool to prevent” the disease. Meanwhile, a measles outbreak in Texas continues to expand.

When did they start vaccinating for German measles?
The rubella vaccine became available in 1969 and the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination program started in 1971. Before that, rubella was a common and widespread infection in the United States.Jan 17, 2025Impact of U.S. MMR Vaccination Program | Rubella - CDC

I had the ring scar from the needle gun on my arm for quite a few years. I remember the sugar cube was for polio.

It was definitely after 1970, maybe 71 or 72.

the problem is you can have the german measles and not feel sick. I had the german measles and felt fine but had to stay in isolation.

In the 1960s, the vaccine that commonly left a scar on the arm was the smallpox vaccine, which was a routine childhood vaccination in the United States until the 1970s.

Rubella has not been completely eradicated globally, but it has been eliminated in many regions of the world
As of 2022, rubella has been eliminated in the following regions:
Americas, Europe, Western Pacific, and Southeast Asia.
However, rubella still circulates in other parts of the world, including Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.
To prevent rubella, it is important to get vaccinated with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. This vaccine is highly effective in preventing rubella and its complications, including congenital rubella syndrome, which can cause serious birth defects in pregnant women.
Efforts are ongoing to achieve global eradication of rubella. However, this will require continued vaccination efforts and surveillance in all parts of the world.

*****************

While rubella, also known as German measles, is no longer endemic in the United States, it still exists in other parts of the world and can be brought into the U.S. by travelers

Oh yeah.. sugar cube=polio.  Ringy Dingy on the arm was smallpox.

LOL, I wonder if Elon has a record of it from the COBOL Database.  I could end up being 3000 years old in the morning.  Best Monday of my life. Do I get a prize for being in the Guinness Book of Artificial Intelligence Records?  I'll settle out of court for a non tariffed creamy stout.
