My 401 had a Money Market option which is something I assumed all plans have until I discovered that some don't.
What a bitter pill for those who are close to retirement with no way to protect their nest egg.

I dont have much in 401k except afew old jobs but I aint old enough cash them out without paying full taxes yet.

I mostly saved up my ca$h in the Credit Union but only last afew years get real Interest Rates on a "C/D" again.

Currently my "Certificate Of Deposit" covers my Property Taxes but I also have to pay income tax on that Interest I earned too

My education has been sporadic and unconventional. For example, I sold term papers by the dozens when I lived in a college town, and in order to do so, I had to read the texts. So, no credits - but lots of education. I write and cogitate at a post-graduate level - especially in the field of literary criticism, - and I research science and cutting edge clinical medical practices better than most lay people. 

When I DID matriculate, I was also selling term papers. I never took a course on human geography - but I've read the college texts and written papers on the topic. Same with many subjects. I've done dozens of literary essays evaluating various books for college classes. You mentioned the Renaissance. I have critiqued Shakespearean sovereigns from the perspective of a Machiavellian prince, and I have critiqued Shakespearean courtiers from the perspective of a Castiglionian courtier. I had to read both authors and Shakespeare in order to do that. That is some thick reading. As a result, I got pretty deep into the ethos and pathos of that historical period. 

I educated myself as a young man by reading voraciously, mostly 19th Century writers like Kipling, Poe, Hawthorne, Vern, Twain, London - the kind of stuff that attracts young (but serious) readers. Kipling was the last of the 19th Century guys I got addicted to, and then I moved on to Hemingway - an excellent bridge, was Kipling, as he tended toward fewer compound and complex sentences than folks like Hawthorne and Vern. After Hemingway I discovered Steinbeck, and then Orwell and Huxley. There was never any talk of college in my family. We were as blue collar as it gets. I thought people who lived in brick houses were rich, and I thought kids that weren't beaten were just cut from better cloth. I did not know what I did not know - so, getting an education came in fits and starts. It was just outside my overton window to attend university - I thought that was for other people. But I found community colleges at a young age, and I never stopped taking classes wherever I lived (and I've lived all over the country, east west north and south). I've taken classes at jucos in every decade of my adult life, including my teens and including my sixties. I never want to stop learning. I will be attending some juco somewhere in my 70s and likely in my 80s. 

By the way, when Pelosi said that **** in the 90s, she was still a liberal and still AGAINST globalism. They had not yet gotten to her. There was another cali girl - a Barbara Boxer - who was also a solid liberal. I donated time and money to both women back then, as they used to be liberals. I still consider myself a liberal. I just refuse to redefine liberal as your party has done. Your party is extremely zealous about redefining ****.

I found a Meme in a drawer cleaning out an office.  It read "Electricians were created...  Because Engineers need Heroes Too"  Yes I achieved the degree, and I was fortunate to be in a privileged town in a privileged time.  But so many of the workers where the rubber meets the road taught me the most. And still do this today.
