In the 1990s when [[[NAFTA]]] was being pushed by the Tiny Hats I saw a documentary that showed what life was like for Mexican Nurses that worked in a hospital. I've spent a lot of time in Mexico - and I don't mean just in tourist areas. I've driven the countryside all over Baja. I've spent weeks in Morelia and in Mexico City. I've spent days on the Meskin Riveria and in and around Cancun. So we're talking both coasts and inland, too. I'm sure there may be open sewage SOMEWHERE in Mexico. IIRC the "Shanty Town" was thrown together to give the lower ranking hospital workers a place to live near the hospital.
I was in my first year of a union apprenticeship program when the video was shown in class so no doubt they were doing their best to drive home the message that competition with millions of people willing to live like slaves was not in the best interest of the American working class.
My big adventure in Baja was getting a 67 Camaro painted at an outdoor body shop in Rosarito Beach 1980.
The "facility" was some tin roofed carports and oiled down dirt.
They did EVERYTHING that your car could possibly need....including lacquer paint jobs.
The highlight of the trips was stopping at a family run, 2 table restaurant that featured fresh caught lobster, beans and fresh tortillas.
There was no menu.
