I don't have a problem with your metaphor, there. China is already that guy, with a lot of SE Asian countries displacing it in one area as it moves into another - same as what Japan went thru on the road from junk maker to high end provider.
China doesn't just make lighters and knives anymore. It makes cars. It exports more cars than than the US does by several times. It's neck and neck with europe - and europe's share of the auto market is toiletward bound, as the US has blown up its cheap gas supply. China's share of the car export market is set to explode as its quality continues to climb and europe's production capacity implodes. You wanna talk about a tariff? But the notion that his tariffs are gonna hurt china worse than they hurt us?
