The federal government released the results of a multiday emergency drill intended to assess our ability to handle the next massive solar storm. Unfortunately, it sounds like there’s a lot of room for improvement. According to a report published earlier this month by the Space Weather Operations, Research, and Mitigation (SWORM) task force, institutions across […]

Experts routinely review protocols and options for the next inevitable cataclysmic asteroid strike, for example. But while that kind of cosmic predicament only occurs roughly once every 25,000 years, massive solar storms happen more frequently. These flare-ups generate gigantic clouds of energized gas and dust that can bombard Earth at speeds of roughly 2 million miles per hour. Such particles subsequently distort the planet’s magnetosphere and produce atmospheric displays like the aurora borealis. But in an interconnected and digitized world, these forces can also wreak havoc on power grids, communications systems, and satellite arrays.

However, even if agencies implement better response protocols and clearly articulate risks to the public, the fact remains that a solar storm’s lead time is incredibly short. Currently, experts are only able to accurately assess the incoming impacts of a coronal mass ejection around 30 minutes before it reaches Earth. SWORM noted “significant discussion was dedicated” to just how little a half an hour’s heads up affords agencies, and suggested developing an advanced warning system—even if it’s imprecise.

The first US solar storm emergency drill did not go well

I am very confident TRUMP will have MUSK and Space X take a look at those measures needed to effectively give us more advanced "warning".

Nobody got off on the wrong foot, except you. I never said I was a survivalist. I said I am a "prepper". What is a Prepper?A prepper is someone that creates a plan, gathers resources, and gains skills so that they can be more prepared for emergencies, disasters, and other survival situations.
Preppers are normal people from all walks of life that understand the need to plan ahead to prevent hardship.Preppers try to reduce their dependencies on infrastructure. There are several strategies for this, including:
  • stockpiling and storing extra resources (esp. food, water, tools)
  • learning survival skills
  • building resilient communities
  • or going off-grid
Most preppers use a combination of these strategies to better prepare themselves and their families for a wide range of potential threats. The combination they use can let you know what ‘level’ they have pushed their preparedness to.

I've actually got more that a year - but there is little doubt I'll be taking in a few refugees. So call it a year, But also I have hens. So there's an ongoing food source. And I know how to make dandelion greens taste good and how to make flour out of cat tails and how to forage in general. I also understand how little food a person really needs; I do a good bit of fasting.

One concern I have for my free ranging hens is that what keeps them alive is fear. The coons and coyotes don't dare come near them in the daytime (they don't wander more than a couple hundred feet in any direction), and they're locked up tight at night. But if the predators ever lose their fear, my hens are dead meat. Nothing doesn't eat chickens - not even chickens.

It's my opinion that so long as they are not desperate, the predators will never face their fear of coming close to humans. But if they ever get hungrier than they are scared, I'm wiped out. The woods around me a deep, so that shouldn't happen - but you never know what **** cards fate can deal.
