Conclusion

I can explain the increased risk.It has nothing to do with "acceptance." It has to do with mental illness, of which the sexual orientation is a symptom. 

In the case of your lebanse/thespiams from Lisbon, it comes down to not being able to find a man and having to settle for another woman in similar straights. Many women of a particular phenotype (a tad bulky and mannish) find themselves divorced with children. Being alone is a tough row to hoe, but any man they can attract is either an absolute loser or is secretly attracted to the kids. So they settle. And they're not particularly happy, of course. They're forced to pretend this is a choice and not a corner into which life has painted them.

I wasn't old enough to really appreciate them. I recall trying to watch them as a kid - rolled my eyes and chalked it up to "weird Englishmen"
