I think it's time for the USA to attack Iran.

India and Pakistan have nukes.  They were at each others throats a month ago.

Nobody blew up. Very few people died.  And Trumpocalypse stole it as his own success.

Both Pakistan and India are like "WTF is wrong with the dude?". I realize discussing anything outside of the America First Hole In One Zone fries your neural synapsis of the action like a Feasterville McDonalds

I never said I know what all Iranians want anymore than you just did. You start with "perhaps" and then rant speculation followed by an accusatory tone about my opinion.

Sure, some ****-mouth how wonderful being under a yoke is. All safe and predictable.
(Some Russians said that too, hoping something would mitigate the chaos after the Soviet break up.)

It's what you're used to. No surprise there.
Doesn't mean they have any particular love for that. Closed societies aren't so closed anymore.
Between reading a few books and talking to some folks, I form some kind of opinion.
It is only that. An opinion that, just like yours, is coming from a western point of view.

Their impressions voiced to me paints a picture of why they did all they could
to escape the government (not their own people).

They are just another set of folks that have said (to my face) about Americans in general:
"You don't realize what you have here."
As I said: If you would know the feelings of Iranians, you'd have to go to Iran.

You are getting the feelings of expats, and mistaking those for the feelings of workaday Iranians.

The whole "captive of a **** government" thing IS a real thing - don't get me wrong. You are one.

And it takes on to know one. I'm one.

I'm not mistaking anything.
You're assuming I pretend to know "people that are still there" based on, as I explicitly said, "escapees".
Certainly they know more than you or I, though.
If you cannot grant me that much then I don't know what you're driving at.

If you or I went to a foreign land, I dare say we'd know more about day-to-day American life
than your average Ubangi.

I don't doubt expats know a bit moreabout their homelandthan do folks who've not traveled there.

I'm simply arguing that that people who left are a bad source to know how the people who stayed feel.

I don't trust your chinaman, either. My position is not altered by his defenses.

I have not said that an expat CANNOT represent the mainstream view. I am simply saying that what expats say about their homeland's government is no kind of evidence what the mainstream thinks. And that includes your token yellow peril. :)

Not just me. Sez Dr. Google.Image

I axed AI, "Do expats generally represent the mainstream culture of their native countries?"

And what did AI say?

Not necessarily, it's a complex issue!

While expats carry their cultural backgrounds with them, several factors influence how they represent their native culture abroad, and whether that representation aligns with the "mainstream".

Here's why it's not a simple yes or no:
  • Individual differences: Each expat is an individual with unique experiences and perspectives. Some may be more inclined to maintain and represent their traditional customs, while others may be more open to adopting aspects of the host culture and even developing a hybrid identity.

  • Reasons for migration: Expats move for various reasons, including work, lifestyle preferences, or seeking better opportunities. These motivations can impact their level of engagement with both their home and host cultures.

  • Interaction with the host culture: The degree to which expats interact with the local population and their openness to adaptation will influence how they are perceived and whether they represent their native culture in a way that resonates with the mainstream.

  • Cultural adaptation and change: Living abroad often leads to a degree of cultural adaptation and change. Expats may adopt new behaviors and perspectives, potentially leading to a shift in their cultural identity and how they present themselves to others.

  • Stereotypes and perceptions: The perception of expats by the host country can be influenced by stereotypes and biases, regardless of whether those perceptions are accurate.
In summary: Expats don't automatically represent the mainstream culture of their native countries. They are diverse individuals with varying experiences and approaches to cultural identity in a new environment. The level and type of cultural representation they embody depend on a complex interplay of personal choices, interactions with the host culture, and even pre-existing perceptions and stereotypes.

So you can see that, "I know me some chinamen" does not necessarily give you any insights that the average aardvark doesn't have.

It's a crap shoot, sir. And a hell of a day at sea.

  • Some terrorist cell with bulldozers and Geiger counters dig up that fissionable material.
  • They sell it to Yemen, Burkina Fazo and a Mexican Drug cartel.
Then, good luck trying to put that genie back in the bottle.

This is Israel's war.  Israel need to put boots on the ground and recover that fissionable material  I don't mind the US supporting an operation like this with intel, equipment and ordnance.  But, it's up to the Israelis to get the job done and get it done right.  It will be on THEM if they half-*** this and leave fissionable uranium laying around like Joe Biden left military equipment in Afghanistan.
Agreed....
