I want to find a good technical school to teach me proper metal working. When I retire, that's on my bucket list.*GHETTOBLASTER » 19 Jun 2025, 8:11 am » wrote: ↑ Few people have a firmer grip on reality than your Old School iron workers and machinists.

I swear...you simply can not be a farmer or a rancher without being a self taught iron worker too.ROG62 » 19 Jun 2025, 8:43 am » wrote: ↑ So true... I try to get over there weekly as it's always a pleasure to chat him up...the guy is a true book of knowledge...
he grew up on the farm...he said the old man was constantly bitching about the shoddy work the blacksmith in town did fixing stuff...at 15, he told his dad, "you buy me a welder, and I'll fix it for you..." BTW, the blacksmith was my best friend's uncle...![]()
he bought him a Montgomery Ward's welder and a how to weld book...he taught himself how to weld...soon after the old man would be flying out to the field telling him to get back to the shed and fix something...the rest is history...
Lathe or Milling Machine. I was leaning toward the Milling Machine, but I think I cold make more useful stuff with the lathe. I don't have room for both; and I may need to beef up the amperage to run either, which likely means running wire.*GHETTOBLASTER » 19 Jun 2025, 8:59 am » wrote: ↑ I've had the same wish..but instead just ended up being a self taught hack.
I bought a HF 9x13 lathe about 20 years ago for about $1000 and over the years I've been able to make about $20 worth of stuff with it.![]()
I'm just joking...I don't use that machine often but over the years it has proven to be irreplaceable as a problem solver when it comes to supporting my hobbies and for keeping my other machines and old equipment running.
