Though Ustinov is phenomenal (and surely a model for Hurt's Caligula in the BBC adaptation of I, Claudius), this is a middling adaptation of a remarkable novel by a Nobel laureate.
It's greatest sin may be the casting of Petronius who, in the novel, is one of the greatest portraits extant.
