There's no pretending...they need to be protected doing their mandated job...end of story...Mrkelly » 17 Oct 2025, 10:21 am » wrote: ↑ Yes
our government can’t just pretend that there is justification for sending troops into our cities
I realize that you have no problem with that

You can lead @PhiloBeddo s horse to knowledge. But you can't make it think.
If I said to you that so-called "anti-fascists" are empowered by a feckless city government to breach the peace and imperil public safety on a regular basis with impunity, would you say that my claim is false?

I'm not supporting US troops, necessarily. I find that problematic, Constitutionally. But I am axing if you believe anything needs to be done there.
I have no more faith in a few cherry-picked kumbya vids than I do in fox news' reportage. I believe that homeless louts, "anti-fascists," and ne'er-do-wells are allowed to terrorize the public in Portland with near-absolute impunity. I would argue that Portland is a city under seige from LCD street thugs, and I will back that argument up with AI.
So my question to you is, what would YOU propose be done to correct this situation and provide a just and secure city for the responsible tax paying citizens? Do we owe them nothing at all - just join their local government in saying **** 'em?
However, reports from news outlets, business groups, and company statements confirm that several high-profile businesses have cited unrest and associated issues as a contributing factor in their decisions to close locations in Portland. These issues often include vandalism, theft, organized retail crime, and safety concerns for customers and staff.
Prominent retailers that have closed locations in Portland include:The total number of business closures related to unrest and theft is difficult to pinpoint for several reasons:
- no spam : Citing theft and organized retail crime, Target announced in September 2023 that it would close three Portland stores.
- no spam : The apparel giant permanently closed its popular Portland factory store in 2023, following a temporary closure due to safety concerns and theft.
- no spam : In March 2023, the last two Walmart locations in Portland closed, with the company citing financial reasons and theft as a factor.
- REI: Closed its Pearl District store in early 2025, with increasing crime rates and safety concerns being factors in the decision.
- Other businesses: A handful of restaurants and shops, such as Next Level Burger and Chipotle, have also reportedly left certain neighborhoods due to safety concerns, theft, and arson.
- Multiple factors: Businesses rarely cite only one reason for closing. The decision is often influenced by multiple issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic, changing consumer behavior, inflation, and other economic factors, in addition to unrest.
- Lack of distinction: Unrest, theft, and retail crime are related but distinct issues. While protests and riots in 2020 caused significant initial damage, some business closures have been tied to sustained increases in retail crime and safety concerns that continued in the following years.
- Undisclosed reasoning: Many businesses, especially smaller local operations, may not publicly disclose the reasons behind their closures, making it difficult to tally a precise number.
- Downtown vs. citywide: The impact has been most visible in downtown Portland, but many closures have occurred across different neighborhoods. Comprehensive reporting on the number of smaller businesses affected is lacking.

While the "No Kings" protests are designed to be widespread, with events in over 2,500 communities, the largest protests are expected in major metropolitan areas.
Key cities for large protests
Organizers and news reports have identified several "anchor" cities where particularly high turnout is anticipated:
Washington, D.C.: A large crowd is expected at the Capitol and on the National Mall.
New York City: Marquee events are planned across the city.
Chicago: A large gathering is expected in Grant Park between noon and 2 p.m. local time.
Los Angeles and San Diego, CA: Major crowds are anticipated in Los Angeles, while thousands gathered in downtown San Diego during the June protests.
San Francisco, CA: A human banner protest was held at Ocean Beach during the last protests, with major events planned for today.
Atlanta, GA: Organizers are expecting large crowds at the State Capitol.
Boston, MA: The city is identified as another major protest hub.
Kansas City, MO: Large-scale protests are planned.
New Orleans, LA: The city is a major location for the demonstrations.
Houston, TX: The city is expecting marquee events.
Bozeman, MT: A surprisingly large protest is expected in Bozeman, an uncommon anchor city.
Philadelphia, PA: A major demonstration is planned.
Distributed protest model
While large crowds will convene in major hubs, the movement is built on a distributed model to show that dissent is widespread. Organizers encourage activists to create local events to reach people who cannot travel to bigger cities. This includes rallies in smaller towns, like Burns, Oregon, and Bryson City, North Carolina.
