Why would they kill the help? The Jews were free labor. Also, the work they were doing was heavy labor. They weren't just sewing buttons on shirts. They worked the railroads, carried heavy ammunition, lifted scrap metal in and out of the factories...etc...

The railroads and ammunition require speed and efficiency. Workers sicked and starved would interrupt that. The Germans couldn't afford to be held up all during wartime. 

My great grandfather died in a German concentration camp. Yeah, he was guard, got drunk and fell out of a tower.
