I used to believe this, but I think I was naive and bought into the whole "For the people, by the people,...etc..." dogma. If this was true, then it wouldn't be so hard to activate our power over Washington. Especially since there are 320 million of us. We have been voting politicians in and out of office for two centuries. Nothing changed. We have protested for over two centuries. Nothing changed. Riots, assassinations, and J6. Nothing changed. The reason is because the people do not possess any power whatsoever. The power is, and has always been, solely with the ones who possess the economic forces that shape the politics and policies.
