The most notable case was that of Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-Yemeni Islamic cleric accused of being a senior operational leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). He was specifically targeted and killed in a CIA drone strike in Yemen on September 30, 2011. 
Other U.S. citizens killed in separate, subsequent drone strikes included:

• Samir Khan, another American of Pakistani descent and publisher of an al-Qaeda internet magazine, who was killed in the same strike as al-Awlaki.
