Pennsylvania football team fumbles Florida trip: 8 teen players arrested before championship game

POLK COUNTY, Fla. - A trip to Florida for a national championship turned into a fumble for a youth football team from Philadelphia this weekend, leaving eight teenagers in handcuffs and their teammates short-handed for the big game. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested eight members of the "United Thoroughbreds," a traveling youth football team, on Saturday morning. The teens, ranging in age from 14 to 15, were charged with felonies after deputies say they coordinated a scheme to steal more than $2,200 worth of merchandise from a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Posner Plaza According to the arrest report, the group didn't just grab items and run; they had a playbook. Deputies say the teens split into two squads. One 15-year-old purchased a small item at the front register to acquire a legitimate store bag. He then met up with the rest of the team in the aisles, where they allegedly stuffed the bag—and a separate backpack—with high-end gear. The haul wasn't cheap. The recovered items included Nike Tech Fleece joggers, wind runners, and hoodies, along with various football accessories. The list detailed specific, high-demand gear like "Jolly Rancher" and "Warheads" flavored mouthguards, chrome back plates, and turf tape. The total value of the theft was confirmed at $2,296.07. Store management noticed the group concealing the items and alerted authorities. When three of the teens attempted to walk out past the points of sale, deputies were waiting. The other five were detained inside the store.
