Oklahoma teaching assistant fired after uproar over flunking Christian student who referenced Bible in essay
The teaching assistant tasked Fulnecky and her classmates with writing a response to a scholarly article titled "Relations Among Gender Typicality, Peer Relations, and Mental Health During Early Adolescence," which discusses results of a study about gender norms among middle schoolers and the social ramifications children may face for not conforming to gender norms.
They were asked to provide a "thoughtful discussion of some aspect of the article." The rubric for the assignment did not require students to provide empirical evidence in their responses.
The third-year student responded by saying that gender norms should be celebrated, not denigrated. She cited Genesis, the first book of the Bible, in which God created men and women equally, but with separate purposes. "Gender roles and tendencies should not be considered 'stereotypes,'" Fulnecky wrote in her essay. "Women naturally want to do womanly things because God created us with those womanly desires in our hearts. The same goes for men. God created men in the image of His courage and strength, and He created women in the image of His beauty. He intentionally created women differently than men and we should live our lives with that in mind."
She later described the societal push toward nonbinary gender identification as "demonic."

My Boo boo had an EXCELLENT upbringing with more male role models than you can shake a stick at.
I entertained a LOT of gentlemen callers, sometimes more than one a night. So the idea that he didn't have plenty of male role models is certainly a false one. And most of the men I entertained were natural athletes.

The student, Samantha Fulnecky, turned in a biblically inflected rant that did not appear to be college-level work. When efforts to get the teaching assistant, Mel Curth, to immediately change the grade did not succeed, Fulnecky contacted the president of the university; the governor of Oklahoma; a conservative, anti-union organization; and the press to complain that she was a victim of religious discrimination.
I have an update for you, and it’s not good. Fulnecky, who had already had the failing grade removed, has become a right-wing media darling. Curth was fired, and another instructor from the University of Oklahoma was placed on leave for a related controversy.

The Trump administration and sympathetic state legislators like those in Oklahoma, in their zeal to end what they believe is “woke” gender and racial ideology, have chilled academic freedom. Fulnecky’s personal quest has intersected with a broader, decades-long effort to turn Americans against higher education.
