Actually, I will tell you how this is likely to go. 

FIRST, the indigenos must declare sovereignty. Otherwise, Danmark owns Greenland still, and the US cannot simply steal a fellow NATO member's territory.

SECOND, the indigenos vote to be part of the U.S., in exchange for 50k per person. That comes to 2.5 billion US, which would be recouped in about 11 seconds once the drilling, mining, and over-fishing begins. 

THIRD, all of the trojan horse NGOs that are preventing mining and drilling will pack up their carpet bags for a new destination and new dirty deeds done dirt cheap. Then the drilling, mining, and over-fishing begins. 

All done. The country will be flooded with money, jobs, doodads, and *** - in a trice. And it's all legal.

Now, ax me about the canal...
