The flue fire in my home burned for maybe fifteen minutes in January 1972.
Since our home was uninsured at the time, we had to buy all new clothes that we couldn’t wash the stink out.
The ceilings were black. Out on the sun porch we scrubbed the pine roof clean, and the rest of the house needed scrubbing and two coats of paint.
We replaced the entire carpet as Mama’s school check allowed.
It’s still there.
My tenants took up a section of the carpet in my old bedroom and asked me, did you know the floor in your bedroom still smells faintly of smoke?
Yep, I said.
Teach that boy to be careful how he loads the stove.

Did you retire to your beach mansion while the insurance paid for your renovations (or I mean repairs) like Joe did?
