The 9/11 attacks
- The deadliest terrorist attacks in U.S. history were perpetrated by al-Qaeda, a jihadist organization led by Osama bin Laden, on September 11, 2001.
- Terrorists hijacked and crashed four commercial airplanes. Two struck the World Trade Center in New York, one hit the Pentagon, and one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the hijackers.
- The attacks killed 2,977 people and injured thousands more. The vast majority of those deaths occurred in the initial crashes and collapses.
