The poem was very sad indeed. The actual charge was a stupid and futile action ordered by some stupid British high muckymuck who was not actually part of the charge.
I imagine some old Lord Hawhaw, the seventh Earl of Ramsbottom, looking at the whole mess through a spyglass saying, "By George, her Majesty has no finer or braver cavalry."
