The main difference is that marijuana affects the body in noticeable ways that many people find pleasant, while all tobacco does is make the smoker cough a lot.
I don't think inhaling smoke is at all healthy, but humans have been using fire to cook with for at least 20000 years, and therefore have probably developed a certain tolerance for smoke that meercats and wombats have not.
