We base our understanding and grant recognition of rights to fellow human beings as persons created in the image of God. Inalienable rights granted by the creator. Without that recognition do people have Inalienable rights? Is there an agnostic reason competing humans have to respect one another?
Have you noted that when God appears to people, he does not take any image that is even vaguely human? He appears to Moses as burning shrubbery, He appears to Solomon in a dream, he tends to send one of more angels rather than appear himself.
We should respect one another simply because it is the decent thing to do. It is rather strange that the Founding Fathers claimed they has God-given inalienable rights to pass their own laws, but that somehow the same God did not have any inalienable rights to give to their slaves.
Most of the people of Scandinavia do not believe in God, and they treat one another very politely. They hardly ever shoot one another. So one can easily conclude that God is not entirely necessary for humans to have rights and to live in harmony with other humans.
