Oh, come on, Disney got every kind of accolade and award possible. He had the longest running TV show in US history. He built four theme parks and made BILLIONS. He was a cheapskate as a boss, according to his animators, and he did not give proper credit to his creative geniuses, as most of them have told us.
He got his start in Kansas City. He belonged to my father's Masonic Lodge. My father knew him fairly well, though they were not friends.
The idea for a safe friendly family theme park originated with Kansas City's Fairyland Park, which was at not safe all and filled with dishonest carney games and all manner of greasy spoon food stalls it was at least partly run by gangsters and had unsafe rides that killed dozens over the years. Disney's original idea was a park where you paid one price and could ride anything as often as you wished. This has changed over the years.
Walt's idea was to make tons of money and provide safe entertainment. I can't imagine why he would be disappointed about his performance today.
