The present Democratic Party is not supported by the Democrats of the Slavery era, or the Jim Crow era. The Civil Rights laws and Brown v. Topeka became the law, and rather rapidly, the Southern White folks abandoned the Democratic Party for the Republican Party.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan deliberately began his campaign at the Neshoba County fair in Mississippi, where Klansmen cops murdered Civil Rights workers to send the Goof Ol' Boys a message: "I will not prosecute racist crimes against Black people if I am president." And that is precisely what happened. That was the "Southern Strategy" devised by Lee Atwater.
