As for the possibility of a third sex, this was the topic of at least one Star Trek episode.
The third sex was a silent and rather dense creature whose function was just to serve as a uterus. This allowed the members of the other two sexes to be productive in other ways: neither was inconvenienced by pregnancy.
One of the Enterprise crew felt sorry for the mute and ostensibly mistreated third sex person and it really screwed up the balance of things for the other two and negotiations with Federation membership, as I recall.
