There are terms relating to "swamp" and a bit of a WW2 throwback; yet I recall a very good Dutchman. I was on a Cattle Station in the 70s where I met a Dutch expat. He'd been forced into the German army and marched himself back from the Eastern Front as the war ended; Russkies were NOT kind to him. He got home and didn't recognise it (displaced or destroyed??; after all he fought for the Germans) and just kept on going. He made the Coast and there was a ship that, after various connections, resulted in him being in Oz where he went straight to the bush; worked on properties as he learned English. He spoke English well but had trouble reading it but had picked it up as he went along. I had just finished reading Armageddon by Leon when he saw it and asked what it was about. Now after over thirty years he said that he knew the West had won but he had not been able to find out what happened in those years so of course I gave it to him.
