Tattooing prisoners went out of use until the Holocaust. The tattooes were like the Yellow Stars. Stigma. It's clear that that Hitler didn't create the anti-Jewish sentiment of the early 20th century, but he certainly exploited it. Germans were struggling after the Treaty of Versailles was imposed. Money was worthless and folks were hungry. All that adds up to the events that lead to the death camps. Globally, What happened to the Jews wasn't that unique. Granted we don't tattoo them, but the penal system uses numbers to identify them. Think about this, why would they tattoo them if they just planned on burying them in mass graves afterwards, or baked them to ashes?
