the coup did not merely involve ousting the president...it also involved azov massacring civilians who supported russia....go look up thr Odessa fire for example.

Ukrainians wanted in the majority to be oriented toward the west as the West is free and prosperous while Russia is a slave society bound to resource extraction as its major economic asset.
Putin could not stand to have a western oriented free market prosperous Nation on his doorstep showing Russians what was possible for them.
