marx himself did make very good points about how the bourgeois will naturally resist technological improvement. there were people who did at least touch on this subject.
but you can say x number of people exist today and forget that it may be totally different from the number of people who will exist in 5 years. populations change.
automation is a very difficult subject. if automation turns people into morlocks, as hg wells predicted in the time machine, then i must say i find it spiritually unacceptable.
but wow...thats a big subject. need a whole new thread to tackle that. And i have a lot of conflicting feelings about it with a lot of nuance and i am not confident of any prediction about it.
Automation displaces workers (bank tellers, cashiers, factory workers, assembly lines etc.) while simultaneously increasing production tenfold. This results in massive surplus of every commodity, while decreasing the number of wage earners who can afford to buy them.
That is the paradox of abundance, the “crisis of capitalism” and it all but guarantees there will be some sort of UBI eventually
