Advances on the margin are incredibly expensive to achieve and require scale, to bear the cost AND mitigate the risk (by diversifying their bets)
Big Pharma is largely a group of companies managing portfolios of developing "therapies" and marketing those which survive the approval process.
Big Pharma marketing has been reprehensible, but it's not reason to kill it.
The alternative is to go Australian, where the market for pharmaceuticals is a Monopsony. The only buyer is the Government. This has not stopped Australia from developing a domestic industry, but it probably wouldn't have been sufficient to deal with Covid.
