The hippie movement of the 1960s was a protest against the Vietnam war, wrapped in feminism and linked to a vigorous push for negro enfranchisement. It was presented in a colorful way, with rainbow tie died shirts, use of psychedelic drugs, music festivals, free love promiscuity and a rejection of all authoritarian power. It was an embrace of chaos and libertarian ideals.
Most of their philosophy was self destructive ****, frankly. Without authoritarian power on a large scale, nothing big can happen, the highway system could never have been built, a modern airport or hydroelectric dam would be impossible to create if we were all hippies.
Analyzing the counter culture movement of the hippies, I am reminded of an old adage “don’t throw out the baby with the bath water”, because there is something of great value to be gleaned from modern hippie (bohemian) principles.. the concept of local consumption.
Every state in the U.S. produces food, they have farms, meat packing plants, and coastal areas have fisheries. Yet, people insist on buying food shipped from afar. If people refused to eat anything that was not generated within their home state, how much could shipping costs, and resultant atmospheric pollution, be reduced?
This applies to clothing as well, and here is where it gets very difficult. Modern textile factories are not located in the U.S., they are located in Bangladesh, China, Vietnam and other places, making it nearly impossible to obtain clothes without playing the globalist game.
obviously, seamstresses are not going to make a comeback in the U.S. and we can’t expect that suddenly clothing and shoe factories will spring up in every city to stitch together needed wares. But there is a coalition of U.S. based clothes makers, under attack by the globalists, and if you bought something from them it would make a small difference.

By taking the creation of just two commodities, food and clothes, and boycotting those that are not made local, the globalist agenda could be dealt a savage blow. If electronics could also be generated locally and sold only by local merchants, they would be crippled. But that is pipe dream for now.
