Limbaugh had been a slave to the republican machine for what? 30+ years? He was party line, down the line - a big fat rich **** high dollar whore. Rush was NOT the slave of the Republican party, they won when they adapted to HIS ideology and he never wavered from that position. He was more of a conservative than a Republican and he supported Trump for Trump's conservative positions of low taxation, pro-business, pro-military, and anti-liberal policies which were all shared by Limbaugh who was also a strict Constitutionalist. Those are the areas that intersected with Trump's populist positions.
None have done more for conservatism and constitutionality than Rush did and he was instrumental to the success of President Trump.
