Whenever he is humiliated, he is compelled to try to erase his fails by making up a different story and chanting it nonstop - and I DO mean nonstop - trying to rewrite reality.
It isn't even under his control.
He will repeat the lies literally endlessly - hundreds or thousands of times - because he simply can not face or accept his failures and humiliations.
It is classic narcissism.
