I mean...the fact he was an asshole made his promises plausible.
But one thing you can say in the aftermath is this: white people are tired of ****.
I'm actually dealing with this right now...basically I spoke with some owners looking to sell their bzness and they all gave me the "I'm a honest, brutal, straightforward guy" impression...then I ask for 2 years of tax returns (incl. 2020) and they gave me some random BS about how they "can't show me" how much they reported to the IRS and I should just believe what they put down on some profit/loss sheet.
Basically unless a politician gets hung by his or her entrails for broken promises, I just assume what they say is a lie.
