This all really started after the Cold War which was supposed to bring the Pax Americana and the End of History. I also think that the Cold War was a time where both sides enacted horror in the battle of ideologies (Vietnam?). Still, Russia would probably be ravaging Europe if Trump was truly allowed to bring down NATO. We have the military and we use it to bring peace in a somewhat convoluted way.
