Why does Beijing need to build a military base in Mexico to hurt Americans?
China plays a significant role in manufacturing and exporting fentanyl and it's analogs globally. Despite some efforts by the Chinese government to combat the problem illicit production and exportation of fentanyl still persist. Mexican drug cartels act as distributors utilizing their established smuggling routes and networks to bring fentanyl from China into Mexico and then distribute it within Mexico and across the border into the United States. This has led to an alarming death toll due to fentanyl overdoses with over 36,500 deaths connected to synthetic opioids like fentanyl in the United States in 2019 alone. Many of these deaths are a result of illegally manufactured fentanyl from China being distributed by Mexican cartels.
Comparison to United States Vietnam War Casualties:
The annual casualties of the Vietnam War in the United States peaked in 1968 with 16,899 deaths. In comparison the deaths connected to synthetic opioids like fentanyl in the United States in 2019 were over double that number reaching 36,500. This highlights the severity of the fentanyl crisis and its impact on public health surpassing the casualties of one of the deadliest wars in American history.
