The only way to be committed to a mental institution is to show signs of harming yourself or others during a three day evaluation . During this three day evaluation the patient sees a psychiatrist twice .. once while being admitted and a second time during the evaluation. It's not as cut and dry and you may think. Surely a blue state like Maine would have something similar if a red state like TN does.
