My Great Grandfather joined the First Texas Heavy Artillery Unit, Company K in 1861. He was 12 years old (born in 1849). My paternal family came to this country in 1625 from England. And yes they were slave holding farmers in what would later become Virginia. My Great Great Grandfather, at 18, fought in the War of 1812.
