Nato was created to counter the Soviet Union. The whole cold war was NATO and Russia attacking one another. Thousands of different fronts, skirmishes and wars. Post fall of the Iron Curtain saw NATO attacking Russian proxies all over the middle east. Saw NATO signatory America fight them directly and indirectly in Central America, South America, the Middle East and Africa. NATO extended to Russias border. Ukraine is an understandable red line.
Russia gave up any claim they thought they might have had on thr Eastern Ukraine in 1991 when they signed off on the Ukraine Autonomy Referendum.
