The republican challenger had a large lead in the polls. It had been years since a pub had won the seat. Torricelli dropped out AFTER the deadline to take changes to the ballot. The dems went to court and said that NJ law did not take into this situation and allowed them to make the change. This occurred just over a month before the election.
