AI does the two-step shuffle, can you read the sublimation?

While a highly publicized 2022 observational study found a statistical correlation between unnatural hair colors (like blue, pink, or green) and higher rates of self-reported depression or emotional instability, this research has significant limitations.
  • The Minority Stress Model: People who choose unconventional hair colors are statistically more likely to belong to the LGBTQ+ community, be neurodivergent, or participate in non-normative subcultures. These demographics face disproportionately higher levels of societal discrimination, family rejection, and systemic stress, which drives higher rates of anxiety and depression. The hair dye itself is an expression, not the cause.
  • Self-Reporting and Therapy Bias: The famous 2022 study by Dutton and Kirkegaard relied on self-reported data from an OKCupid dating app dataset, evaluating metrics like "whether the person had ever seen a therapist". Individuals who comfortably reject traditional social norms (by dyeing their hair bright colors) are also statistically more comfortable rejecting the stigma around mental health, making them more likely to openly seek therapy and self-report emotional struggles.
  • Control and Coping Mechanisms: Psychologically, changing one's hair appearance is often a therapeutic coping mechanism. For many, a radical hair change serves as a way to reclaim agency, process a major life transition, or boost self-confidence during a stressful period.
  • Confirmation Bias: On public forums like Reddit, users note that a perceived link is often fueled by observation or confirmation bias. People are simply more likely to notice and remember the mental health struggles of someone with a highly visible, vibrant hair color than someone with a conventional look.
