Some might see this as a distinction without a difference, and that is why they are blind. To me, the difference is the ability to deprive others (power).
If I have a lot of money, that is one thing. If I can have you locked in a cage while I take a rocket ship to the moon, that is another. And modern capitalism defender/apologists seem to think that the endgame of capitalism should not only be unlimited wealth for a chosen few, but unlimited power as well.
There is no consensus on whether capitalism is a zero sum game, and I believe it is not. It was a century ago, but not today.
But power is always a zero sum game.
As long as people simply compete for money then I believe capitalism would work fine. Thus is was very successful and generated a lot of wealth I homogeneous high trust European societies.
But everyone is on an honor system. The moment people 'cheat' and struggle for power instead (intrinsically depriving others of power)...then the whole thing breaks down. Them you have our current system.. "crony capitalism'. And despite the obsession that liberalism had with checking state power with elaborate and exhausting levels of checks and balances...there is intrinsically nothing about capitalism which limits economic power.
Funny how people can compartmentalize their concerns and be blind to threats when they are working on the assumption that everyone will always be a European Christian.
