Israel was killing palestinian citizens long before hamas existed. Hamas is just the military resistance against Israel. And most palestinians support hamas because they fully believe, with reason, that if they do not fight they will be exterminated anyway. At least hamas provides for them the possibility of survival, even if it is slim.
