Socialism always leads to tyranny of the few.
I would agree that socialism is more of a state of mind rather than some specific range of economic policies. But "being neighborly' is a very poor description.

Instead, i would define it as a sense that 'we are all in this together'...that a people share a general basic destiny and we all have to sacrifice to ensure our future where we survive and also perhaps flourish.

that attitude contrasts with mere individualism and selfish pursuit of happiness and profit, which cannot maintain civilization and will certainly destroy any nation which adopts such an attitude.

However,, it is of course important that the people making sacrifices for the good of the society do in fact share a common destiny.. it is pointless and stupid,, for example, for germans to dedicate labor for jews when jews have no concern for the future of germans. Old school communists missed that important aspect and were simply wrong in their assumption that all workers are in fact on the same 'team'. They are not. Nations are divided in their identity and their instinct...especially across race.
