every nationalist fighting force has been based on race. Chetniks, Ustashi, Irgun and countless others. Those fighters were elite. Fighting forces that work for empires like the US or the old British empire, are not patriots or even soldiers..they are mercs
But the word patriot has a very...complicated past.
The word was meant as an insult until very recently. Ancient Greeks would mock barbarians for being 'patriots' while they themselves had a polis...or 'free society'
