They were the backbone of the Japanese military.
Hiroshima was the Headquaters of the 2nd Army and was the defense of southern Japan.
It was also a communications center, and weapons storage point.
Nagasaki was Japan's largest ship building port and the heart of Japan's Navy.
If they were bombing for affect, they would have bombed Tokyo.
Kyoto you mean. And that is what they initially wanted to do.
But no. In the context none of this was necessary. If you have air power over Japan the war should be over.
The bombing was just a dominance display. It was totally unnecessary
